Before you Begin
Servicing the Pinto powered
Capri is far easier than you might think. If you do it yourself, you will do it
better, more carefully and more cheaply than any Garage. However you must have
some basic tools before you start. I suggest the following:
- A decent metric socket set
(this is a must)
- A torque wrench (If you want
the job doing properly)
- A trolley jack (you will
struggle if you insist on using the jack out of the boot !)
- A set of axle stands (for
safety)
- A set of open ended spanners
- A selection of screwdrivers
- A small pair of pliers /
cutters
- A feeler gauge (for setting
the points)
- A dwell meter (worth
investing in one)
- A xenon strobe (the only way
to adjust the timing on your car)
Your Capri requires a 'minor'
service every 6000 miles and a 'major' service every 12,000. The main difference
is that the air filter and spark plugs need replacing after 12,000 miles. The
following pages describe my experiences and advice on how to perform the tasks.
