Service Guide for a Pinto Powered Laser Capri

Before you Begin

Servicing the Pinto powered Capri is far easier than you might think. If you do it yourself, you will do it better, more carefully and more cheaply than any Garage. However you must have some basic tools before you start. I suggest the following:

  1. A decent metric socket set (this is a must)
  2. A torque wrench (If you want the job doing properly)
  3. A trolley jack (you will struggle if you insist on using the jack out of the boot !)
  4. A set of axle stands (for safety)
  5. A set of open ended spanners
  6. A selection of screwdrivers
  7. A small pair of pliers / cutters
  8. A feeler gauge (for setting the points)
  9. A dwell meter (worth investing in one)
  10. A xenon strobe (the only way to adjust the timing on your car)

Your Capri requires a 'minor' service every 6000 miles and a 'major' service every 12,000. The main difference is that the air filter and spark plugs need replacing after 12,000 miles. The following pages describe my experiences and advice on how to perform the tasks.
